Ola`a Nalo Eskrima

History of Derobio Eskrima

Derobio Escrima Is The Foundation Movement Of Olaa-Nalo Eskrima.

Derobio Escrima Is The First Offense And Defense Movement Taught To The New Person Entering Our System.

Derobio Escrima:  Is a Spanish-era defensive combat Escrima style that utilizes a blade in one hand with the other hand empty. While the word Derobio translates to "rhythm of the horse", Derobio is not a horse mounted blade style. The movement of Derobio is to side step the attack, cut the blade arm and then drive to the outside of the opponent for the finishing movement. In addition to its Larga Mano (long range) hand cutting movements, Derobio Escrima also incorporates Medino (medium range) and Corto (close range) movements that include over 144 counter to counter grappling movements. Derobio Escrima relies on rhythm, timing and fluidity with a strong emphasis on foot work, angles of attack and defense gliding or flowing as it moves behind the force of the blow.  Master's rules:  "Glide with the opponent’s movement in order to open up a weak or vulnerable area for counter attack. Protect your head at all costs, keep your alive-hand behind the weapon and wait for the opponent to move before you react."

General Faustino Ablin (Ablen): It is not yet determined from whom or when General Ablin learned Derobio Escrima. The General was a leader in the revolutionary uprising against the Americans in Jaro Leyte 1902-1907 in the “Pulahan Wars”.  The reports differ, some reports say the general was killed in an ambush and some reports say he was captured,  paraded around town by the Americans, then taken away never to be seen again. However, in 1907 the young Brauilo Pedoy came across the general’s hide-out in the mountains above Leyte and the movements of Derobio Escrima were passed on to another generation.

Great Grandmaster Braulio Pedoy was born in the Philippines on October 16, 1900 in Ormoc City, Leyte. At 7 years old he met and then learned Escrima under General Faustino Ablin. At the age of  17, Brauilo Pedoy took his masters examination with General Ablin and then have successfully passed his examination then traveled around the Philippine and Indonesian Islands until 1924 when he left the Philippines for Hawaii.  After arriving in Hawaii GGM Pedoy was assigned to the Ola`a Sugar Cane Plantation located just outside of old Hilo town. After a year on the plantation he returned to the jungle life on the slopes of Mauna Kea where he came to respect and honor Madam Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of the Volcano. After a few years he became a fisherman.  Before WW II he moved to Oahu. During the war he worked as a security guard for the Army and eventually ended up training army troops in the movements of Derobio. After the war GGM Pedoy married, had one son named Eduardo and worked for a local company until he retired in the early 1960's. The Pedoy School of Escrima was established in 1961. During GGM Pedoy’s tenure at the helm of the Pedoy School of Escrima several Maestro and 6 Chief Maestro instructors were promoted, several of whom are still teaching the movements of Derobio Escrima around the world today. Sadly, Great Grandmaster Braulio Pedoy passed away on July 29,1992.
